It’s hard to imagine how someone trained in the military discipline of former Czechoslovakia ends up producing natural wines in Ardèche, France. Andrea Calek left the army in the late 1980s and settled in France after the fall of the Berlin Wall. After studying viticulture in Mâcon and absorbing the knowledge of Guy Breton, one of the pioneers of natural wines in Beaujolais, he made his first harvest in 2007 using vineyards lent by Gerald Oustric.
Today, he works alongside his partner Stephana Nicolescou, managing 8 hectares of vineyards in Alba la Romaine, Ardèche, a land of fertile soils and sunshine, essential for producing fine garnacha and syrah wines. Babiole is a structured red, where vibrant fruit takes the lead, resulting in a luscious wine that “magically” evaporates quickly after opening the bottle.
