West Box
Caja Poniente invites us to look towards the west of Europe. The journey begins in one of the most remote areas of Spain: the Arribas del Duero, specifically in the town of Lumbrales, west of Salamanca and on the border with Portugal. Of the approximately 150 hectares of vineyards that existed in the 1980s, today there are barely 20, spread over small plots between oak forests and Mediterranean scrub. The most representative varieties of the area, such as Doña Blanca and Palomino (in whites), or Juan García and Garnacha (in reds), blend with the granitic soils and the marked thermal variations between seasons, providing a distinctive balance and minerality.
We continue westwards until we reach Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the continent. In Colares, with a deep-rooted winemaking tradition dating back to 1255, the proximity to the Atlantic favours vineyards with a mild and humid climate, which gives the region's wines a particular acidity and salinity that distinguishes them.
Two very limited production wines that exceptionally capture the uniqueness of their respective terroirs, ideal to enjoy with our May box!
