Manuel Valenzuela was one of the pioneers of the natural wine movement in Spain. In 1979 he settled in the Alpujarra region of Granada, between the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean. His vineyards in the Sierra de la Contraviesa, which at their highest point reach 1,368 metres above sea level, are still the highest vineyards in Europe that produce naturally and represented a wine revolution in the area.

Barranco Oscuro pays homage to the traditional wine of the Alpujarra, the vino costa, which in the past mixed the red and white grapes that were in the vineyard. After fermenting in large wooden vats, it was sold to farmhouses and tabernacles in the area. For Manuel's Vino Costa, on the other hand, each variety is harvested separately to reach its optimum point, generating a peculiar rosé with notes of red fruits and the minerality characteristic of the region's terroir.
